FFCOC Annual Auction

Annual Auction

Each Fall the Club has an auction in place of a speaker. This event features primarily Fly Fishing related items, including trips, rods, reels, artwork , flies and other fly fishing materials that are largely donated by members and supporting vendors. This is the primary source of funding for club activities. Membership dues primarily cover the costs of producing  and distributing the newsletter . This event is, as all events, open to the public.

The Club conducts it’s annual free public casting clinic in the spring. This event is open to the public and is offered at no charge to participants. This day long event assists those interested in learning to cast a fly rod or for those wishing to improve their skills. Rod Building

Rod Building Class This Spring

Location: TBD

By Larry Behm

Building your own rod is a good way to get the rod you always wanted, customized as you want it. And, you can save on the cost of a ready made rod.

This class is more than how to assemble a rod as found in some of the fly shop courses. You will learn about the uses for different types of rods. You will learn about rod action. You will learn why rods perform the way they do.

We will show examples of the various types of components out there. You can choose the blank, the guides, the wrapping thread, the reel seat and the grip for your project. You will have the option of turning your own grip to fit your liking. You will each get Rod Building Manual which you can annotate with notes as the class proceeds.

It’s not hard - but it does require good eyesight and hand coordination and practice.

There will be three class sessions on Saturday morning. The first session on May 4. We will use a kit to streamline your learning process and minimize costs. The club will provide the tools needed to complete each student’s rod.

Trout in the Classroom

Quite simply, TIC is a science class. Students from participating schools in the Orange County area learn the importance of preserving our natural resources by examining the life cycle of the trout. The Club provides the necessary training to participating classroom teachers and also provides the classrooms with a refrigerated aquarium. The California Department Fish & Game furnish rainbow trout eggs.

The students are then able to observe the early stages of the trout’s development and through this process under-stand the importance of water quality and the entire ecosystem. Finally, the students have the opportunity to release their “fry” at a local lake or stream ap-proved by the Department of Fish & Game. The kids finish up with a lesson on casting a Fly Rod and maybe catching their first fish on a Fly..
